Finger Tumor After Surgery
About:
a couple weeks before last Christmas, after an extremely busy day tattooing, i noticed a purplish colored nodule on my right ring finger. it was kinda bizarre looking and strange that it appeared out of nowhere... i thought maybe it was a blood blister but after a few weeks it didn't go away but seemed to be getting bigger.
so I made an appt. with my extremely awesome physician, Dr. Wheatley. it took several weeks for my appointment day to arrive, she initially thought it was a cyst and suggested i either a) leave it alone or b) she could try to drain it. obviously i am at the dr. for a reason so we opted to try to drain it. she said that numbing it would be the same as draining (a needle stick) so antiseptic was kind of pointless, so she proceeded with the first needle poke...nothing. "let's try it from the other side, ok?" "ok" no....nothing. well, she was very surprised nothing came out. i could tell she really wanted to try it again so i told her "awe, i am used to needles, go for it", still nothing. so she sent me on my way & told me to think about having it surgically "unearthed".
after about a week of extensive internet and wild imaginations (baby spiders????) i decided to set up another appointment, it took several months for appointments and tests (still being no closer to figuring out what it is) until surgery day. to my surprise it was a full blown surgical operation which i was asleep during! (very disappointing, i wanted to watch, even prepared myself with youtube videos) afterwards when the surgeon showed me the tumor i was still pretty out of but i remember it being white and about the size of a pea. during the next two weeks i was unable to tattoo (which was super depressing) and ended up in the ER with an infected finger... fun...
two weeks after the surgery was stitches removal time. it was horrible! the stitches were stuck and had to be forcefully yanked out - blood everywhere!!! oh yeah, and diagnosis time: cavernous capillary hemangioma is a non-cancerous tumor consisting of an abnormal overgrowth of tiny blood vessels. so basically a ball of veins decided to grow in my finger one day.... i will add it to my list strange things that have happened to me :) now i have a scar on my finger, i sure it will eventually go away if not, oh well...

Within the Skin Interactive Art Project by Terri Huro
An interactive photographic public art project. Anyone is welcome to participate. This project will document such things as wrinkles, scars, birthmarks, tattoos, skin disorders, etc. with photos. Participants will tell their stories in their own words. These photos and stories will be displayed together on facebook, and at our interactive event at the Kanabec County Fair, and possibly other events in the future.
This project was funded by Forecast Public Art with support from the East Central Regional Arts Council with funds provided by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
